Sonos S2 Overview & Compatibility

In June, Sonos will release Sonos S2, a new app and operating system (OS) that will power the next generation of products and experiences. In addition to new features, usability updates, and more personalization moving forward, Sonos S2 will enable higher resolution audio technologies for music and home theater.

Most Sonos products will be compatible with S2. If all of your products are compatible, you will be able to download the app and get started when it’s available in June.

Some of our oldest products (previously referred to as “legacy” products) will not support the advances of S2 due to their memory and processing power.

If you own any of these products, you can continue to use your system as you do today.

FAQ

Do I have to update to S2?

No. If you have products that are incompatible with S2 and would like to keep your system as is, you can. The app you are now using will be renamed the Sonos S1 Controller, and it will continue working with your existing products, music services, and voice services. When prompted to update in the app, simply confirm that you would like to continue with your current experience. If all of your products are compatible with S2, however, we recommend you update so you can enjoy the new software features. 

If I continue using the S1 Controller app, what does that mean for my future experience?

You can continue listening with your system as you do today. Your system will receive bug fixes and security patches, but it will not receive any of the new software features found in S2. We will work with our partners to keep your music and voice services working with our oldest products for as long as we can given their memory and processing power limitations. If we run into something core to the experience that can’t be addressed, we will let you know.

Is Sonos ending support for older products?

No. You can still use older products with the S1 Controller app. The S1 Controller app will receive bug fixes and security patches, but it will not receive future software features.

Are any products incompatible with the S1 Controller app?

Products released after April 2020 will not be compatible with the S1 Controller app. Product compatibility will be noted on sonos.com.

Will new colors and limited edition versions of current products be compatible with the S1 Controller app?
New colors and finishes of existing products will be compatible with the S1 Controller app. Product compatibility will be noted on sonos.com.

What if some products in my system are S2 compatible and some are not?

You can continue using the S1 Controller app to control your system. You also have the option to create two separate systems: one with products that are S2 compatible and one with products that are not. You can also upgrade incompatible products.

What are my options for upgrading to S2 compatible products?

The Sonos Trade-Up program works as follows:
  •  Sonos bridge can only be traded up to a Sonos Boost at 30% of RRP.
  •  Any other eligible Sonos Item ie, the ZP80, ZP90, ZP100, ZP120, Connect (Manufactured 2011-2015), Connect:Amp (Manufactured 2011-2015) and Play:5 (Gen 1) will give you a 30% discount off RRP on any item in the Sonos range. For Example, if you have 2 x Play 5 gen 1's, you will have 2 discount tickets to purchase any other 2 Sonos items i.e. could be a Sonos Arc and Sonos Sub at RRP less 30%.
  • The Sonos Play: 1 and Play: 3 are eligible for a 15% discount off RRP
  • The Sonos Connect and Sonos Connect Amp post manufacture 2015 is also eligible although they do have the new chipset going forward for software released after May 2020. Ie you don't have to Trade them Up but could take advantage of new features etc in replacement models at 30% off RRP. 
  • You need to provide us with the serial number on the item and or items you wish to trade up (preferably a photo of the tag) or bring the unit or units in to us.
  • We will provide you with a 30% discount off the RRP on the units you wish to replace them with. If the units were brought in to us, we will ecycle them responsibly. 
  • You can also carry on using the old units on S1 App. Units purchased after May 2020 will only work on the new S2 app. Therefore you would need 2 different systems in the home but they can interconnect if need be by adding additional Connects and Ports to the systems.
The important thing to note is that the trade up is not like for like.:-) ie in the case of trading up Play 5's, you can upgrade to Sonos Arc or sub or even outdoor speakers and still get a 30% discount. One serial no for 1 discount on 1 item.

  • Sonos ARC $1,599 with 30% discount it will cost $1,119.30 
  • Sonos Subwoofer RRP $1,199 with 30% discount it will cost $839.30
  • Sonos Amp RRP $1,199 with 30% discount it will cost $839.30
  • Sonos Port (Pre-amplifier) RRP $699 with 30% discount it will cost $489.30
  • Sonos in ceiling speakers RRP $999 with 30% discount it will cost $699.30
  • Sonos In Wall Speakers RRP $999 with 30% discount it will cost $699.30
  • Sonos Outdoor Speakers RRP $1,299 with 30% discount it will cost $909.30
  • Sonos Five RRP $849 with 30% discount it will cost $594.30
  • Sonos Move RRP $749 with 30% discount it will cost $524.30
  • Sonos One $349 with 30% discount it will cost $244.30

You will receive a notification that the new app is available. You can simply click to download it. All of your settings and preferences will update automatically.
