Most homes and many businesses are operating on networks that were designed for a handful of devices. Today's connected homes can have 50, 100, or more devices demanding bandwidth simultaneously. If your WiFi drops out, your smart home stops working. If your network is slow, your whole day slows with it.

The Sound Store designs and installs professional-grade home and commercial network infrastructure across Auckland, built to handle whatever you throw at it, now and in the future.

Why Your Current WiFi Probably Isn't Enough

Lets start with a simple analogy.

"Having a fiber connection to your home is the same as having a 16 lane motorway to your home, but your ISP provides you with a bicycle to ride on this motorway" We upgrade the bicycle to a modern SUV:-)

Consumer routers from ISPs or electronics retailers are designed for basic use cases. They struggle with large homes, thick concrete or brick walls, multiple floors, and the density of devices in a modern connected home. Common signs your network needs an upgrade:

  • Dead spots or weak signal in parts of your home
  • Dropping connections when moving between rooms
  • Smart home devices behaving unreliably or going offline
  • Buffering when multiple people stream simultaneously
  • Video calls dropping or becoming pixelated
  • Security cameras losing connection

Ubiquiti UniFi - Our Platform of Choice

The Sound Store installs Ubiquiti's UniFi platform as our preferred network solution for both residential and commercial clients. UniFi delivers enterprise-grade performance and reliability at a price point that makes it accessible for high-end home installations. The unified management interface makes it easy to monitor and manage your entire network from a single dashboard.

For clients who prefer other platforms, we also work with Cisco Meraki, TP-Link Omada, and other enterprise networking solutions, depending on requirements and budget.

Networking for Smart Homes

Every smart home system we design at The Sound Store is built on a solid networking foundation. A poorly designed network is the single biggest cause of smart home unreliability - lights that don't respond, security cameras that go offline, audio zones that drop out. We address the network first, ensuring your smart home has the infrastructure it needs to perform consistently.

For new builds and major renovations, we work at the infrastructure stage to specify cable runs, equipment locations, and network architecture before walls are closed, saving significant cost and disruption later.

Frequently Asked Questions - WiFi & Networking

What is mesh WiFi and do I need it?

Mesh WiFi uses multiple access points working together to provide seamless coverage across a large area. Unlike traditional WiFi extenders (which create separate networks), mesh systems provide a single unified network that your devices transition between automatically. For large homes, multi-storey properties, or any space with dead spots, mesh WiFi is a significant upgrade over a single router.

How many access points do I need for my home?

This depends on your home's size, construction materials (concrete and brick absorb WiFi signal more than timber), and the number of devices you're connecting. As a general guide, a typical Auckland single-level home of 200–300m² needs 2–3 access points for full coverage. We'll assess your specific property and recommend the right number and placement.

Can you install networking in a home that's already built?

Absolutely. While new builds allow us to run structured cabling before walls are closed, we regularly install WiFi access points in existing homes using a combination of surface-mounted cable, existing conduit, and wireless backhaul. The result is a professional network with minimal cosmetic disruption.

What's the difference between WiFi and a wired network connection?

Wired (Ethernet) connections are faster, more reliable, and have lower latency than WiFi. For devices that stay in one place - a smart TV, a home theatre system, a desktop computer, or a security NVR - a wired connection is always preferable. We install structured cabling alongside WiFi to give you the best of both.
